The Hatfield family was a family that resided on the West Virginia-Kentucky border during the 19th century. The family included the Republican Blackberry Hatfields (Preacher Anse Hatfield, Bad Lias Hatfield, and Floyd Hatfield) of Kentucky, many of whom had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and the Logan County, West Virginia Hatfields (Devil Anse Hatfield, Ellison Hatfield, Johnse Hatfield, Cap Hatfield, Elias Hatfield, and Valentine Hatfield). Starting with Devil Anse's uncle Jim Vance's murder of Union soldier Asa Harmon McCoy at the end of the American Civil War in 1865, a Hatfield-McCoy feud developed, peaking in the 1880s as a dozen family members and friends from both sides were killed. While Randolph McCoy's home was burned down in 1888, nine Hatfields were imprisoned for their crimes, and Ellison Mounts was executed by hanging.
