Hasdrubal Barca (245-207 BC) was a general of Carthage during the Second Punic War. The brother of Hannibal Barca and Mago Barca, he was slain at the Battle of the Metaurus in 207 BC.
Biography[]
Hasdrubal Barca was born in Carthage, Tunisia in 245 BC, and his father Hamilcar Barca drowned during the siege of Helice in 228 BC at the start of the Second Punic War. Hasdrubal and his brothers Hannibal Barca and Mago Barca became prominent Carthaginian generals, and Hasdrubal was given command of Spain when Hannibal invaded Italy in 218 BC. Hasdrubal fought against the House of Scipii in Spain for six years; from 215 to 212 BC, the Carthaginians had the worst of the conflict in Spain, but they did not lose any territory. At the Battle of the Upper Baetis in 211 BC, however, Hasdrubal's army slew Publius Cornelius Scipio and Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus. In late 209 BC, Hasdrubal was called to assist his brother Hannibal's campaign in Italy, and he found himself ambushed by two Roman armies at the Battle of the Metaurus in 207 BC. As his army was defeated, Hasdrubal decided to charge into the thick of battle to die a soldier's death, and he was slain.
