
Hasan Ali Turkmani (27 January 1935 – 18 July 2012) was the Chief-of-Staff of the Syrian Arab Army from 2002 to 2004 and Minister of Defense of Syria from 2004 to 2009.
Biography[]
Hasan Ali Turkmani was born in Aleppo in the French Mandate of Syria on 27 January 1935 to a Sunni Muslim Turkmen family. He joined the Syrian Arab Army in 1955 as a junior officer, educated in East Germany in 1965 and Egypt in 1969. In 1973, he led a rearguard action near Damascus during the Yom Kippur War with Israel, and served as Chief-of-Staff of the Syrian Arab Army from 2002 to 2004 and Minister of Defense of Syria from 2004 to 2009. He was assassinated in a bomb assassination in Damascus during the Syrian Civil War on 18 July 2012 alongside Assef Shawkat and Dawoud Rajiha.
