Harry Hughes MD

Harry Hughes (13 November 1926-13 March 2019) was the Democratic Governor of Maryland from 17 January 1979 to 21 January 1987, succeeding Marvin Mandel and preceding William Donald Schaefer.

Biography[]

Harry Hughes was born in Easton, Maryland in 1926, and he served in the US Navy during World War II. He became a lawyer in 1952 and played professional baseball and worked as an attorney before serving in the House of Delegates from 1955 to 1959, in the State Senate from 1959 to 1970, and as Governor from 1979 to 1987. He initiated foreign trade with China and opposed over-fishing in the Chesapeake Bay, and he died in 2019.
