Harris Flanagin

Harris Flanagin (3 November 1817-23 October 1874) was the Democratic Governor of Arkansas from 15 November 1862 to 1 June 1865, succeeding Thomas Fletcher and preceding Isaac Murphy.

Biography[]

Harris Flanagin was born in Roadstown, Cumberland County, New Jersey in 1817, and he taught at a seminary in Philadelphia before moving to Illinois and then to Arkansas in 1838. He served in the State House from 1842 to 1844, in the State Senate from 1848 to 1850, and as colonel of the Confederate 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles during the American Civil War. He went on to serve as Governor from 1862 to 1865. A Whig until 1856, he continued his political career as a Democrat. He died in Arkadelphia in 1874,
