Haris Silajdzic

Haris Silajdzic (born 1 October 1945) was Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 25 October 1993 to 31 January 1996 (succeeding Mile Akmadzic and preceding Hasan Muratovic) and from 3 January 1997 to 6 June 2000 (succeeding Muratovic and preceding Spasoje Tusevljak. He also served as President of Bosnia and Herzegovia from 6 March to 6 November 2008 (succeeding Zeljko Komsic and preceding Nebojsa Radmanovic) and from 6 March to 10 November 2010 (succeeding Komsic and preceding Radmanovic). He was a member of the Party of Democratic Action until 1996, and he later became a Party for Bosnia and Herzegovina member.

Biography[]

Haris Silajdzic was born in Breza, SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, Yugoslavia in 1945, and he studied the Arabic language and Islam in Benghazi, Libya after completing his madrassa education in Sarajevo. He became an Arabic language professor in Pristina, SAP Kosovo, and he later became a philosophy professor in Sarajevo. He entered politics as a member of the conservative Party of Democratic Action following Bosnian independence, and he served as Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1990 to 1993, Prime Minister from 1993 to 1996 and from 1997 to 2000, as the 6th Bosniak Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2006 to 2010, and as its Chairman in 2008 and 2010. He opposed the autonomy of Republika Srpska, and he sought for the Serbs responsible for the genocide of the Bosnian War to be held responsible and punished.
