Hara Shigeuji (died spring 1177) was the leader of the Ugo Rebellion of 1176 after the death of his colleague Yasuda Harutada.
Biography[]
Shigeuji was a rural peasant leader who owned a parcel of land in Ugo Province, the northernmost settled province of Japan, which was ruled by the Kubota Fujiwara. When the Fujiwara daimyo Fujiwara Motofusa failed to provide enough rice to feed the whole population of his lands, Yasuda Harutada and Hara Shigeuji led the Ugo Rebellion of 1176.
Shigeuji succeeded in capturing Kubota from the Kubota Fujiwara, killing an important government general in the process, but in spring 1177 daimyo Fujiwara Motofusa and his army marched on Ugo to reclaim Kubota for the Kubota clan. Shigeuji was slain in the final battle for Kubota, ending the uprising.
