Hans von Lehwaldt

Hans von Lehwaldt (24 June 1685-16 November 1768) was a Field Marshal of the Prussian Army.

Biography[]

Hans von Lehwaldt was born in Labiau, Prussia (now Polessk, Kaliningrad Oblast) in 1685, and he joined the Prussian Army in 1699. He served in the War of the Spanish Succession and fought at the Battle of Blenheim, and he fought against the Swedes in Pomerania during the Great Northern War. He held corps commands during the War of the Austrian Succession, and he was awarded the Pour le Merite in 1762 and the Order of the Black Eagle in 1744. Lehwaldt became a Field Marshal in 1751, and he commanded Prussian forces in East Prussia during the Seven Years' War. While defeated at the Battle of Gross-Jägersdorf, he blockaded the Swedes at Stralsund and, due to poor health, was relegated to Governor of Berlin in 1759. He died in Konigsberg in 1768.
