Hanover (1692-1866), also called the Electorate of Brunswick-Luneburg, Electorate of Hanover, and Kingdom of Hanover was a long-lived North German city-state. Connected to Great Britain by the House of Hanover since 1714, the state was an ally of Britain during its wars in Europe such as the War of the Austrian Succession and Seven Years' War. It was occupied by France during the Napoleonic Wars, but after the wars it gained independence as a kingdom, rather than an electorate. It allied with Austria during the Seven Weeks War, a mistake that cost it its freedom at the hands of Prussia.
