The Hammonton ambush occurred on the night of 18 January 1920 when Al Capone and Jimmy Darmody ambushed a convoy of trucks carrying liquor for Arnold Rothstein near Hammonton, Atlantic County, New Jersey. Rothstein's men had just picked up the shipment from Captain Bill McCoy off the coast, with Davey Murdoch supervising the shipment. The convoy was halted by an overturned car, and the drivers were lined up in front of Capone and Darmody. Capone heard deer running through the woods, startling him, so Capone and Darmody executed four of the men, with Rothstein's sister-in-law's nephew Simon being mortally wounded. Through Simon, the police and Rothstein were separately able to identify Darmody as a perpetrator, forcing Darmody to flee to Chicago and leave the employ of Enoch Thompson.
