Hamilton is the capital of Bermuda and the main settlement of Pembroke Parish. Hamilton was founded in 1793 and named for Governor Henry Hamilton, and it replaced St. George's as capital in 1815. The city has since served as the political and military heart of Bermuda; it is now home to the Sessions House, Cabinet Building, Fort Hamilton, and Anglican and Catholic cathedrals. Hamilton became a city in 1897, and it evolved into a business district during the 20th century as Bermuda became a finance hub. By 2016, Hamilton had 854 residents, making it one of the smallest capital cities in the world.
