Halig (died 880) was a West Saxon soldier in the service oof Ealdorman Wulfhere and, later, Uhtred of Bebbanburg during the 9th century.
Biography[]
Halig was born in Wessex to an Anglo-Saxon Catholic family, and he served under Ealdorman Wulfhere during the Viking invasions of England. In 878, while taking care of Wulfhere's horses in the forests of Somerset, he was greeted by King Alfred the Great, Leofric of Winchester, and Ealdorman Uhtred of Bebbanburg, and he informed them that Wulfhere had left without telling him where he was going. Halig then joined them for the Battle of Edington, and he became Uhtred's right-hand man after Leofric's death in battle. He followed Uhtred into slavery after Guthred betrayed them, and they were brought to Husavik, Iceland to serve as timber workers. After a failed escape attempt, during which Halig killed the overseer Hakka, Halig was bound to the prow of the slaver Sverri's ship and died.
