Haci I Giray

Haci I Giray (1397-1466) was Khan of Crimea from 1441 to 1456 (succeeding Sayid Ahmad I and preceding Hayder) and from 1456 to 1466 (succeeding Hayder and preceding Nur Devlet).

Biography[]

Haci Giray was born in Trakai, Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a descendant of Jochi. He and his brothers backed Tokhtamysh against Edigu, and Haji Geray and Devlet Berdi established themselves in Crimea after Edigu's death in 1419. After Devlet Berdi's death in 1427, Haci Giray conquered Crimea from the Golden Horde in 1428, 1434, and 1441 and became the first Khan of Crimea. He fought against the Golden Horde with Lithuanian, Greek, and Genoese support, and, while he was briefly deposed by his son Hayder in 1456, he returned to power and reigned until his death in 1466.
