The Hong Kong Police Department (HKPD) is the police force of Hong Kong, an autonomous region of China. The HKPD was formed as the "Royal Hong Kong Police Force" on 1 May 1844 under the United Kingdom, which annexed Hong Kong after the First Opium War; it was Asia's first and the world's second modern police force. In 1997, it became the "Hong Kong Police Department" when Hong Kong was united with mainland China, and it grew to have 40,000 officers.
