Hotel de Ville 2022

The Hôtel de Ville is the city hall of Paris, France. The Hôtel de Ville was built in 1357 and expanded in 1533, with building work being finished in 1628. The building was the stage for several famous events during the French Revolution, notably the 14 July 1789 murder of Jacques de Flesselles and the Thermidorian Reaction of 1794. On 30 October 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, revolutionaries broke into the building and captured the Government of National Defense, while making repeated demands for a communal government. The Communards chose the building as their headquarters during the Paris Commune Revolt, and they set fire to the building as government troops put down the uprising, destroying almost all extant public records from the Revolution. From 1873 to 1892, the building was rebuilt within the stone shell that had survived the fire, and it was rebuilt with allegorical art and monuments to famous Parisians.
