Gyrth Godwinson

Gyrth Godwinson (1032-14 October 1066) was the Anglo-Saxon Earl of East Anglia and the brother of Harold Godwinson.

Biography[]

Gyrth Godwinson was born in 1032, the son of Godwin, Earl of Wessex, the brother of Tostig Godwinson, Harold Godwinson, and Leofwine Godwinson. On his father's death in 1053, Gyrth inherited the Earldoms of East Anglia, Cambridgeshire, and Oxfordshire. He, Harold, and Leofwine were slain in battle with William the Conqueror's invading Normans at the 1066 Battle of Hastings, despite Gyrth's earlier pleas for Harold to let him take command of the army as Harold remained in London.
