Gwenydd (863-) was the illegitimate daughter of Ealdorman Cynon of Gloucester and the pagan witch Modron. She was the product of a fertility ritual conducted by Modron with Cynon's help, and she served as her mother's helper in Gloucester. She befriended Brigid (Gunnar the Blacksmith's wife) and the Viking warrior Eivor, who enlisted her help with finding (unbeknownst to Eivor) her father during the Samhain festival on 31 October 876. When her father went to be burned alive in the Wicker Man a day later, he assured his tearful daughter that he would still be there for her as the earth she walked on, and he secured a promise from his successor Tewdwr to take care of his wife and daughter once he died.
