Guy Johnson (1740-5 March 1788) was the Superintendent of Indian Affairs of Great Britain from 1774 to 1782, succeeding his uncle William Johnson and preceding his cousin John Johnson, and a leader of the Tories and Native Americans during the American Revolutionary War.
Biography[]
Guy Johnson was born in 1740, the nephew of William Johnson; he was descended from the House of O'Neil of Ireland. Johnson became an agent of the Indian Affairs Bureau of Great Britain under his uncle, who served as Superintendent, and he worked with the Iroquois confederacy after leaving Ireland in 1756. On his uncle's death in 1774, Guy became the new Superintendent of Indian Affairs, and he commanded Tryon County loyalist militias as well as allied Native Americans. Johnson fought against patriots in the Mohawk Valley, and he gave homes to those who lost their homes to the 1778 Sullivan Expedition. In 1782, Johnson was replaced as Superintendent by John Johnson, and he was accused of falsifying charges. He died in London in 1788 while defending himself.
