Guy IV of Spoleto

Guy IV of Spoleto (846-899) was the Duke of Spoleto and Camerino from 889 to 897, succeeding Lambert II of Spoleto and preceding Alberic I of Spoleto, and Prince of Benevento from 895 to 897, succeeding Ursus of Benevento and preceding Radelchis II of Benevento.

Biography[]

Guy was born in 846 to the House of Guideschi, being the son of Guy II of Spoleto. In 889, when his father was crowned King of Italy, Guy was granted the Duchy of Spoleto and Camerino. Guy was a capable warrior and leader, conquering Benevento from the Byzantine Empire in 895 and declaring himself prince. He offered the regency of Spoleto to Guaimar I of Spoleto, but Guaimar was captured by gastald Adelfer of Avellino, so Guy besieged Avellino and secured his release. He met Emperor Lambert II of Spoleto in Rome in 897, and he was murdered there by Alberic I of Spoleto, who took the realm for himself.
