Biography[]
Gunter von Reinhardt was an aristocrat of Germany who was tall and calm, who was always composed. While at Heidelberg University, Reinhard was a championship fencer and gave Horst Bucher a scar in a duel. Reinhardt later became a colonel of the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany and took part in the 20 July 1944 Operation Valkyrie bomb plot. He believed that the problem of Heinrich Himmler taking over Germany in the event of Adolf Hitler's death was the problem of the Praetorian Guard - the guard, in this case the SS, would elect the new Caesar, in this case the new Fuhrer. Reinhardt and Wolfgang Muller, his friend, led Wehrmacht troops to the General Staff HQ in Berlin, where they had a standoff with Horst Bucher and Heinrich Himmler's SS troops, and they eventually decided to meet with Himmler to decide the future of the Reich. Himmler sent Reinhardt to help Joachim von Ribbentrop in his negotiations with Joseph Stalin to negotiate a peace treaty with the Soviet Union, and when he returned from Moscow, he was appointed as Rommel's chief-of-staff to help him with day-to-day affairs. However, Himmler wanted him to report on Rommel's actions daily to keep tabs on the Field Marshal, who was a possible threat to Himmler.
