The Gulf of Corinth is a deep inlet of the Ionian Sea which separates the Peloponnese from western mainland Greece. During the Middle Ages, the gulf was known as the Gulf of Lepanto (Naupactus), and shipping routes between the port of Piraeus and the western Mediterranean pass along the gulf.
