Guiderius (20-43 AD), also known as Togodumnus, was King of the Britons from 40 to 43 AD, succeeding Cunobeline and preceding Caratacus.
Biography[]
Guiderius was born in 20 AD, the son of the Catuvellauni king Cunobeline. He succeeded his father to the kingship in 40 AD, and he refused to continue tribute payments to the Roman Empire, leading to Emperor Claudius invading Britain in 43 AD. Guiderius conscripted all the men of Britain against Claudius and forced the Romans to retreat to their ships after an initial battle. However, Claudius' chief of staff Lelius Hamo dressed in Briton armor and persuaded the Britons to attack the Roman army, allowing for him to get close to Guiderius, whom he then assassinated. Caratacus took up the leadership of the British resistance after his brother's death.
