Guardian Council

The Guardian Council is a legislative council in Iran that oversees the parliament and supervises elections. The council consists of six Islamic scholars chosen by the Supreme Leader and six jurists chosen by the Majlis (parliament), and it is charged with interpreting the constitution, approving candidates to the Assembly of Experts, the President, and the Majlis, and serving as a sort of "supreme court" for the country. The council is one of the highest governing bodies in the country.
