Grimur Kamban

Grimur Kamban (812-874) was Chief of the Faroe Islands from 825 to 874, preceding Sigurd Eysteinsson.

Biography[]

Grimur Kamban was born in Norway in 812, and he became a Viking in the Irish Sea. In 825, he and his men discovered the Faroe Islands by way of Ireland, and the landing of Grimur and his men caused the native Irish and Pictish inhabitants to leave. He settled at Funningur ("finding") on Eysturoy, and his nickname Kamban, meaning "crooked", was given to him due to his prowess as a sportsman. He died in 874.
