Grifo II "the Usurper" of Bavaria (745-) was the King of Bavaria from 15 December 775 to 6 January 777, succeeding and preceding Tassilo III of Bavaria.
Biography[]
Grifo was born in 745 to King Grifo I of Bavaria, and he was from the House of Karling, a dynasty of Catholic Franks. Grifo became the king of Bavaria after conquering it as a claimant on 15 December 775, deposing Tassilo III of Bavaria. He allied with King Adelchis of Lombardy, and he intervened in the war between the Republic of Venice and the Kingdom of Lombardy over Istria, but to no avail. Grifo was nicknamed "the Usurper" due to his unpopularity following his coup, and on 6 January 777 Tassilo III was installed due to faction demand, deposing Grifo II.
