Greer Norwood

Greer Norwood (born 10 April 1543) was a Scottish noblewoman who served as a lady-in-waiting to Mary, Queen of Scots and was married to Aloysius Castleroy.

Biography[]

Greer Norwood was born in Kinross, Scotland on 10 April 1543, the daughter of Robert Norwood, and she came from a once-wealthy family with dwindling fortunes. She became a lady-in-waiting to Mary, Queen of Scots, becoming one of her closest friends and companions. In 1557, she and the other ladies accompanied Mary to the French court, where Greer aimed to marry for riches and power to help her family recover from their decline. She went on to marry Lord Aloysius Castleroy, and she became "Lady Castleroy" and joined her husband in converting to Calvinist Protestantism. She was charged with treason and banished from court after her husband was found to support Protestant rebels, and she moved into a townhouse and became a madam. Greer continued to have a limited involvement with her former friends, and she was also impregnated by the pirate Martin de Lambert in a one-night stand.
