Greater Poland, also known as Wielkopolska in Polish, is a historical region of western Poland, with its capital at Poznan. The name "Greater Poland" does not refer to a large historical territory, but rather the homeland of the Poles. Gniezno, the earliest capital of Poland, is located in the Greater Poland region, as are the cities of Kalisz, Pila, Ostrow Wielkopolski, Leszno, Lodz, Bydogoszcz, Wloclawek, Piotrkow Trybunalski, Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Belchatow, Inowroclaw, and Sieradz.
