
Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county in North West England. The county consists of the metropolitan boroughs of Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford. The region underwent urbanization and industrialization due to the boom in the cotton industry during the Industrial Revolution, and the area later became known for its media and digital content, guitar and dance music, and for Manchester United FC. In 2016, Greater Manchester had a population of 2,782,100 people.
