The Great Yan was a short-lived Chinese dynasty which existed from 756 to 763, with Luoyang serving as its capital. It was founded by An Lushan during the An Lushan Rebellion, during which he captured the abandoned city of Luoyang after the Tang forces abandoned the city. The dynasty won the support of some former Tang nobles due to its leniency shown towards the former Tang officials, but the officials betrayed and murdered him in 757 due to his failure to defeat the Tang. His son An Qingxu was less able as a military leader and an Emperor, and Great Yan fell into civil strife. Emperor Suzong of Tang took advantage of Great Yan's troubles and invaded their lands, recapturing the imperial capitals of Chang'an and Luoyang. An Qingxu was then murdered by his general Shi Siming in 759, and, when Shi Siming died in 761, his son Shi Chaoyi took over. In 763, Shi Chaoyi's death extinguished the Great Yan and ended the An Lushan Rebellion.
