The Great Stand on the Ugra River was a standoff between the armies of the Russian Grand Duchy of Moscow and the Tatar Great Horde that occurred on the banks of the Ugra River in 1480.

After Ivan III of Muscovy stopped paying tribute to the Mongols, Ahmed Khan ibn Kuchuk led an army towards Moscow, leading to a standoff between the two armies on the banks of the Ugra River. Ahmed Khan waited for Lithuanian reinforcements to arrive, but they never did, and one Mongol attempt to cross the river failed due to Mongol fire, forcing Ahmed Khan - whose army suffered from disease and lack of fodder for horses - to retreat. Both armies departed after little fighting, ending nominal Tatar suzerainty over Russia. Ahmed Khan was killed in battle with Nogais in January 1481, and, in 1502, the Crimean Khanate destroyed the Great Horde as an organization.
