Biography[]

Maxwell Dixon was born in New Rochelle, New York on 4 March 1966 to a family of Jamaican descent, and he later became an emcee under the rap name of "Grand Puba". He was first associated with the short-lived Masters of Ceremony group, but he later formed Brand Nubian with fellow New Rochelle residents Sadat X and Lord Jamar. The members of the group were "Five Percenters", meaning that they were militant members of the Nation of Islam; they often rapped about Black Power and the inferiority of non-blacks. After the release of group's 1990 debut album, One for All, Grand Puba left to start his own solo career.
