The Grand Duchy of Baden was a south German monarchy that existed from the early 19th century until the end of World War I in 1918. It was initially a sovereign government before becoming a state of the German Empire in 1871. Prior to that, it was under the sphere of influence of Austria. The country had a population of 1.3 million in 1836. Baden's ruling party was the Conservative Party and it was an absolute monarchy.
