Gotaland is one of Sweden's three geographic regions, located to the south of Svealand. It was named for the Germanic Geats, and it is divided between the agriculture-rich provinces of Vastergotland and Ostergotland. In 1658, Denmark-Norway ceded Blekinge, Halland, Scania, and Bohuslan to Sweden, and they became part of Gotaland, which had itself only been considered Swedish towards the end of the Middle Ages. In 2017, Gotaland had a population of 4,776,001 residents.
