
Gonzalo Queipo de Llano (5 February 1875-9 March 1951) was a Captain-General of Nationalist Spain during the Spanish Civil War. He was formerly a general of the monarchy of Spain during the Spanish-American War and Rif War, and he later supported Francisco Franco's government.
Biography[]
Gonzalo Queipo de Llano was born on 5 February 1875 in Tordesillas, Spain. Queipo de Llano joined the Spanish Army in 1896, and he served in the Spanish-American War. In 1923, he became a Brigadier-General, and he was demoted and imprisoned for his criticism of Miguel Primo de Rivera's dictatorship, being dismissed in 1928. In 1930 he failed in his attempt to overthrow King Alfonso XIII of Spain and fled to Portugal, but in 1931 he returned to Spain after Alfonso XIII was overthrown. During the Spanish Civil War, he decided to join Nationalist Spain due to his opposition to the shifting governments, and he took part in the capture of Seville, and he led the Army of the South during the war. He died in 1951 at the age of 76.
