Gomez Suarez de Figueroa y Cordoba (1 September 1587-1634) was a Spanish general who was Viceroy of Valencia from 1615 to 1618, Governor of Milan from 1618 to 1625 and again from 1631 to 1633, and Viceroy of Catalonia from 1629 to 1630.

Biography[]

Gomez Suarez de Figueroa was the 3rd Duke of Feria and also the Marquis of Villalba, holding both titles from 1604 until his death in 1634. Suarez was appointed as the Viceroy of Valencia in 1615, but moved to Milan in 1618. While serving as Governor of Milan for a second term from 1631 to 1633, he devised a plan to link Spanish Lombardy and the Spanish Netherlands by capturing the Swiss city of Rheinfelden in 1633 during the Thirty Years War. With his victory, his plan succeeded, and he is considered to be one of the last great commanders of Spain. He died of tyhus in Munich, Bavaria, in 1634, a great loss to the Spanish Empire.
