The Golden Horn is a major urban waterway in Istanbul, Turkey. It was served as the Greek colony of Byzantion's natural harbor due to its breadth and depth, and it became a trading harbor and popular residential area under the Byzantine Empire; its Great Chain blocked unwanted ships from entering. It was nicknamed the "Golden Horn" for its wealth and its horn shape. Until the 1980s, it was polluted with industrial waste, but it was cleaned over the following decades, and its fish, wildlife, and flora were largely restored.
