The Golan Heights is a geographical region on the border of Israel and Syria. The region was disputed after Israel seized the region from Syria in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War, and the western two-thirds of the Golan Heights (including Mount Hermon) were effectively annexed by Israel in 1981. In 2010, Israel told Syria to abandon hope of regaining the Golan Heights, as 41 settlements were established on the Golan Heights.
