Godwine of Oxnaforda

Godwine of Oxnaforda (867-887) was a Mercian nobleman who led a rebellion against Lord Wilfrith of Mercia during the 880s. In 887, King Alfred the Great of Wessex sent his general Aethelhelm to conquer Oxford from Godwine, and Godwine was killed in the ensuing suppression of his uprising. Oxford was subsumed into Wessex, followed by several other rebellious Mercian cities.
