Gododdin was a Brythonic kingdom in north-eastern Britannia which existed from the 5th century AD to 638 AD. The Votadini were a foederati tribe under Roman Britain, and the warlike heritage of the Gododdin was well preserved, sharpened by constant conflict with the Picts. By the 5th century, the conflict between the Britons and the Anglo-Saxons showed no signs of abating, and the Angles rose in Bryneich to the south-east. Lot Luwddoc fought to safeguard his kingdom from his foes, and, in the 6th century, Gododdin was invaded by the Angles, who founded the kingdom of Bernicia. In 600, the Gododdin suffered a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Catraeth, and, in 638, their capital of Edinburgh fell to the Angles, and the native Brythonic population was either replaced or assimilated.
