Go-Murakami (1328-29 March 1368) was Emperor of Japan from 18 September 1339 to 29 March 1368, succeeding Go-Daigo and preceding Chokei. He was a leader of the Southern Court during the Nanboku-cho period, opposing Ashikaga Takauji and his forces.
Biography[]
Go-Murakami was the son of Emperor Go-Daigo and Lady Renshi, and he succeeded his father as Emperor of Japan at the age of eleven in 1339 during the Nanboku-cho period. He ruled from the Southern Court in Yoshida, fighting against the Ashikaga Shogunate, and Kusunoki Masanori reclaimed Kyoto from the Ashikaga in 1348. However, in 1352 Ashikaga Yoshiakira recaptured Kyoto, and he continued to campaign against the Ashikaga to the north. In the First Battle of Yodogawa in 1352, Go-Murakami's army - which had already been weakened in a battle with the Akamatsu - was crushed by Ashikaga Yoshiakira. Go-Murakami died in 1368, having failed to recover Kyoto.
