Biography[]
Gloria Johnson was born in Denver, Colorado in 1962, and she attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville before working as a teacher, special needs educator, and caregiver in Knox County. She served in the State House from 2013 to 2015 and from 2019 as a Democrat, and, on 6 April 2023, she survived a Republican-instigated expulsion vote by a single vote after she and fellow state representatives Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson joined a gun control protest held in the State Capitol building. Following her acquittal, she called on Americans to help "stomp out this march to fascism" and warned that democracy was under threat, while acknowldging that her skin color may have played a role in her survival of the expulsion vote, while the Black-Asian Jones was expelled.
