Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre is a theater in London which was originally built in 1599 by William Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, on Maiden Lane (now Park Street) in Southwark. The theater burned down on 29 June 1613 after a theatrical cannon used for the play Henry VIII misfired during a performance and set fire to the wooden beams and thatching. The Globe was rebuilt the following year, but it was closed down by the Puritans in 1642 during the English Civil War and pulled down from 1644 to 1645, ostensibly to make room for tenements. In 1997, the theater was rebuilt to scale and reopened, although it could house only 1,400 spectators rather than the original theater's 3,000.
