Glenn Ford

Gwyllyn Samuel Newton "Glenn" Ford (1 May 1916-20 August 2006) was a Canadian-American actor from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Born in Sainte-Christine-d'Auvergne, Quebec, he was a great nephew of Prime Minister John A. Macdonald and was a relative of American president Martin Van Buren. In 1922, his family moved to Santa Monica, California, and he became a US citizen in 1939. He became a prominent actor starting in 1939, appearing in the film noirs Gilda (1946) and The Big Heat (1953), receiving three Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy Movie for Pocketful of Miracles (1961), and also playing the role of Superman's adoptive father Jonathan Kent in the 1978 superhero film Superman. Ford was initially a Democrat, supporting Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940s, Adlai Stevenson II in 1956, and John F. Kennedy in 1960, but becoming a Republican and supporting Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984. He died in Beverly Hills in 2006.
