The Giza Zoo is an 80-acre zoological garden in Giza, Egypt. The zoo was built by Khedive Isma'il Pasha and opened on 1 March 1891, housing a collection of many plants from India, Africa, and South America, as well as 180 birds and 78 other animals taken from Isma'il's private menagerie. The zoo was considered one of the best in the world by the mid-20th century, claiming 4,700 exhibits by the end of World War II. In 2004, it lost its membership with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums because it did not pay its membership fees and ignored the recommendations of inspectors. In December 2022, the zoo was close for a year of renovations.
