Giuseppe Garofano was an Italian businessman who served as Chairman of Montedison.
Biography[]
Giuseppe Garofano was born in Abruzzo, Italy, and he was raised in Milan. After important financial experiences, he served as Chairman and CEO of Montedison from 1990 to 1992, as well as managing director of Ferruzzi. Garofano was involved with corruption; he paid large bribes to politicians so that ENI could buy back its shares at around 600 billion lire over their value, and Raul Gardini decided everything related to the bribes. In 1993, during the Tangentopoli scandal, Garofano was extradited from Switzerland to Italy and was interrogated by prosecutor Antonio di Pietro, who used Garofano's testimony to further his investigation against Enimont. Gardini committed suicide rather than face imprisonment, while Garofano continued to be a successful businessman, founding the consulting firm IBI SpA in 1996.
