Giuseppe Carillo (died 1 November 1934) was the boss of the Carillo crime family of New Orleans. He and 18 of his men were killed by his trusted protégé Sal Marcano and his brothers in 1934 in a ploy to take control of the family.
Biography[]
Carillo was born to an Italian family in Sicily and immigrated to the United States, settling in New Orleans, Louisiana. He became a crime lord and ruled illegal operations in the city with an iron hand, holding influence over police, politicians and his multiple rackets.
One of the first prominent members of his organization was Valerio Marcano, a Sicilian immigrant who joined the family in 1914. Valerio's sons, Sal, Lou, Lucio and Tommy, soon began running errands and jobs for Carillo, but Carillo and the Marcano brothers were convicted of illegal activities and sentenced to prison. Inside, Carillo formed a bond with Sal after he saved him from a near murder attempt, and he made Sal his protégé, briging him into the family and offering him his own rackets. However, Valerio was a degenerate gambler and finished up owing a lot of money to various people, which compelled Carillo to kill him. As a favor to Sal, Carillo offered to spare his life, but Sal insisted that Carillo do what he had to do, and Valerio was shot dead at his home.
Despite this, Sal, who looked to control illegal operations in New Orleans and take Carillo's title away from him, used his father's murder as a pretext for he and his brothers to go to war with Carillo, and they were initially unmatched against the stronger bulk of Carillo's faction. On 1 November 1934, as Carillo was about to win the conflict, he hosted a celebratory dinner at a popular restaurant with 18 of his subordinates, but Marcano and his brothers had dressed up as waiters and infiltrated the establishment, and as Carillo was cheering to his victory, he and his men were shot dead by the Marcano brothers with Tommy guns.
