Girolamo da Treviso (1508-10 September 1544) was an Italian Renaissance painter and an engineer in the service of King Henry VIII. He was killed during the Siege of Boulogne.
Biography[]
Girolamo da Treviso was born in Treviso, Italy in 1508, and he worked as a Renaissance painter in Bologna during the 1520s. Girolamo later worked in Genoa, Faenza, Trent, and Mantua, and he went on to work as a painter in England before being recruited by King Henry VIII as an engineer. During the Siege of Boulogne, he was not trusted either by the King or by the Earl of Surrey, but he was, in reality, a genius. He pushed his men to undermine the walls of Boulogne in two weeks, as the King had forbade him from taking three weeks. He then succeeded in causing an explosion underneath the castle, taking down the city; however, Treviso was crushed to death by the debris while trying to rescue a trapped sapper, and only Harry Hurst left the tunnel alive.
