Gille Brigte of Galloway

Gille Brigte of Galloway (1126-1185) was Earl of Carrick from 1174 to 1185, succeeding Uhtred of Galloway and preceding Donnchadh of Carrick.

Biography[]

Gille Brigte was born in 1126, a son of Fergus of Galloway and the brother of Affraic of Galloway and Uhtred of Galloway. After his father's death, he engaged in a succession struggle against Uhtred, and he was given the western partitioned region of Galloway. In 1174, while King William the Lion invaded England, Gille Brigte had Uhtred brutally murdered and claimed all of Galloway for himself, but, on his death in 1185, Uhtred's son Lochlann of Galloway seized power.
