Gilbert Kennedy, 3rd Earl of Cassilis (12 May 1515-15 November 1558) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier who served as Treasurer of Scotland.
Biography[]
Gilbert Kennedy was the son of Gilbert Kennedy, 2nd Earl of Cassilis, and he succeeded his father in 1527. As a young man, he studied at the University of St. Andrews and in Paris, and he was captured while fighting against England at the Battle of Solway Moss in 1542. Cassilis was held at the Tower of London before coming into the care of Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer. Kennedy became one of the first Scottish nobles to adopt Protestantism, owing to his friendship with Cranmer. In 1554, he served as Treasurer of Scotland, and he then served as Extraordinary Lord of Session from 1546 to 1558. Cassilis fought at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547, and he died in Dieppe, France in 1558 while supervising the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots to the future Francis II of France.
