
Gideon Orkar (died 27 July 1990) was a Major of the Nigerian Army who led a failed 1990 coup against Ibrahim Babangida's government.
Biography[]
Gideon Orkar was from a Protestant Tiv family in Nigeria, and he joined the Nigerian Army in 1972. In 1974, he was promoted to Lieutenant, and in 1986 he was given command of the Nigerian 22nd Armored Battalion in Oyo State. In 1990, Major Orkar led a coup d'etat against President Ibrahim Babangida's government, but the coup was put down and he was executed by firing squad on 27 July.
